Zoe Saldana was born on June 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey, to Asalia Nazario and Aridio Saldana. Her parents, Aridio and Asalia are both Puerto Ricans. Her family was from Queens, New York. The family she was raised with moved from Queens, New York, to the Dominican Republic when she was 10; they lived in the Dominican Republic for 7 years. Zoe discovered a keen desire to perform dances when in the United States. She started training with the ECOS Espacio de Danza Dance Academy in order to master ballet along with a myriad of different dance styles. Not only did her training offer a great outlet for the energetic and enthusiastic youngster and her family, but it was also proving to be a fortunate precursor to the beginning of her acting career.
