
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - October 18, 2000) was an American actor and performer who toured for more than 40 years. A torch-singer renowned for her sultry, languid contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 until 1969. Her recording of "Cry Me a River", a track she released on her debut album was admitted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award for 1974 due to her performance in Emergency as nurse Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her acting career began as an actress , while she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's career as an actor lasted 35 years. with film in 1944 and included roles as the female lead in numerous westerns. She starred along with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) as well as Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) as well as with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and alongside Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. It was the beginning of her professional music career. Her last studio album was released in the year 1969. She maintained her popularity in the role of the female main character in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) She starred alongside her husband Bobby Troup.
